While it’s business as usual this month for many other industries, the warehouse and logistics sector is currently experiencing something special: SAFEtember. For those who haven’t yet heard of it, SAFEtember is a Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) campaign that aims to raise awareness of the dangers associated with operating fork-lift trucks.

As advocates of warehouse fork-lift safety, we fully support the SAFEtember campaign. More to the point, it’s a campaign we believe is still very much necessary, because unfortunately, despite efforts being made by industry to improve warehouse safety, accidents do still occur.

Last month, for example, a multi-million-pound-turnover food manufacturer and one of its directors were heavily fined following an incident in which a worker was crushed by a fork-lift truck. In many cases, incidents such as these are avoidable by using effective safety management systems, which are specifically designed to create a safe warehouse and protect workers.

Systems such as these prevent accidents occurring for reasons of visibility, complacency and human error. Different functionality means that some systems are more effective than others. In the incident for which the food manufacturer was fined, if location aware technology was in place then the accident could have been prevented from occurring in the first place – meaning both the injuries sustained by the worker and the heavy fines handed down to the company and one of its directors would have been avoided.

Although progress has been made in recent years, there is still a long way to go in terms of ensuring all employees working in warehouses are safe. A key part of achieving this is through education and ensuring workers understand the hazards they’re exposed to in their environment, especially fork-lift trucks. However, having an awareness of risks doesn’t necessarily prevent injury. By installing an appropriately selected and effective intelligent warehouse safety system, warehouse operators can have peace of mind that their workers are protected from injury and the company is protected from law suits and fines.
